Averett 80, Lynchburg 75

For immediate release – 12/9/2005 - #149 — Despite game-highs of 24 points and 11 rebounds from junior center Caroline Wesley (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame), the Lynchburg College women’s basketball team was defeated 80-75 Friday evening by visiting Averett University in non-conference play.

The Cougars led 41-40 at halftime and opened an 11-point advantage midway through the second half after a 9-0 run. Lynchburg cut the lead to 76-74 with 30 seconds left after a step-back three pointer from freshman Jessie Pierce (Evington, VA/Jefferson Forest). Both teams missed free throws in the closing seconds before Jetarwa Miles hit a pair at the line with eight seconds remaining to seal the game.

Wesley hit eight of her 12 attempts from the floor and eight of 10 from the free-throw stripe. Sophomore guard Erika Seay (Midlothian, VA/James River) had 15 points and three three-pointers, while junior Jessie Bridge (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft) posted 10 points and eight rebounds. Pierce had eight points and seven assists, and Lacey Currle (Fairfax, VA/Bishop O’Connell) had eight points and five boards.

Jasmine Adams hit all nine of her chances from the charity stripe and finished with a team-high 15 points for Averett (4-2). Hanna Taylor had 13 points and eight rebounds before fouling out, and Taketta Maxwell had 13 points and made all five of her shots. Tiffany Deloatch distributed nine assists and Miles had seven points and nine rebounds. Averett shot 50 percent from the floor (28-56).

Lynchburg (2-5) will be off for three weeks over finals and Christmas Break, returning to action on Tuesday January 3. The Hornets will host Wesley College at 6 p.m. in a non-conference contest.
