The Hawks used baskets by junior Brandon Parrish (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln) and freshman Michael Woolley (Seattle, WA/Nathan Hale) in the first 1:40 to capture an early 4-0 lead, but Wheaton went on a 14-5 run over the next 4:18 to lead 14-9. Aside from a 17-17 tie with 9:31 on the clock, the Lyons controlled the first half of play, outscoring the Hawks, 24-5 over a 7:50 span to balloon their lead to 41-22. Seniors James Greenslit (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) and Sean Kelly (Providence, RI/Wheeler School) accounted for 15 points during that stretch, as the visitors entered the intermission with a commanding 43-26 lead.
In the second half, Wheaton picked up right where it left off with 13 unanswered points and a 56-26 advantage with 15:21 remaining. Sophomore Brent DiGiovanna (Hanover, MA/Hanover) scored the Lyons' first five points of the stanza while freshman Kristopher Pedra (Avon, CT/Avon) scored the team's next five. Wheaton bulged its lead out to as many as 31 points on two occasions to put the game away early.
The Lyons used a combination of intelligent play and solid shooting in the win, committing just six turnovers while shooting 47.1 percent from the field. Wheaton had single-digit giveaways for the third time this season and now average just over 12 turnovers a game. The Blue and White's top shooting half came in the opening frame as the Lyons hit 56.7 percent of their shots including a 6-of-9 (.667) clip from three-point territory.
All five Wheaton starters nearly posted double-figure scoring in the win, as junior Brian Zukowski (Dracut, MA/Dracut) led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points and a trio of three-pointers. Greenslit and DiGiovanna accounted for 11 points apiece, while Pedra finished with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Kelly rounded out the starter contributions with nine points.
Roger Williams sophomore Geoff Baranger (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) scored a game-best 17 points with team-high totals of six rebounds and three assists. Woolley added seven points and three boards in the loss.
Wheaton will face its third Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent of the season Saturday against Endicott College. Tip-off in Emerson Gymnasium is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
