Grand View 77, Simpson 74

Des Moines, Iowa — Grand View (6-2) defeated Simpson (2-5) 77-74 in men's basketball action Dec. 8 in Des Moines, Iowa. The game was tied 15 times and the lead exchanged hands nine different times. Grand View's Reggie Hoegh broke the ninth tie of the second half with a three-pointer at the 5:54 mark. The Vikings led 74-69 with 39 seconds remaining when Todd Lorenseon made 1-of-2 free throws.

Jason Parkinson connected on a three pointer eight seconds later to cut the Grand View lead to three. Brett Cermak fouled Brett Baumgart who missed both of his free throw attempts, but Jim Strand got the offensive rebound. Strand passed it to Hoegh, who was fouled by Cermak. Hoegh made both free throws to make it 76-72. Parkinson took the ball the length of the court which resulted in a Hoegh foul. He sank both of his attempts to make it a 76-74 game. Simpson fouled Lorenson who again made 1-of-2 free throws, making it a one possession game with nine seconds remaining. Parkinson again took the inbounds pass, but he turned the ball over with four seconds to go. Grand View dribbled out the clock, giving the Vikings the victory.

Both teams shot over 50% from the field. The Storm shot 54% (27-for-50) while the Vikings shot 53.1% (26-for-49). Although Grand View went to the line 12 more times than the Storm, the Vikings shot only 50% from the charity stripe (14-for-28). Simpson was 12-for-16 (75%) from the line. Hoegh led all scorers with 26 points. Lorensen, the Prairie City, Iowa native, had 21 to go along with six assists. Marcus Thie scored 12 while Strand added 11. The Storm were led by Ryan Hittenmiller who shot 8-for-11 from the floor to score 20 points. Hittenmiller also grabbed a game high seven rebounds. Parkinson had 18 (6-for-9 shooting) while Jason Soppe was 6-for-8 from the field to score 14. Scott Ellens had 12 points and tied with Cermak for the team lead in assists with four.
