William Paterson 71, Rutgers-Newark 45

WAYNE, NJ — (Dec. 7, 2005) - Junior forward Luis Martinez (Passaic, NJ/Clifton) finished with a game-high 29 points along with eight rebounds as William Paterson stifled Rutgers-Newark , 71-45, to record a New Jersey Athletic Conference men's basketball victory Wednesday night at the Rec Center.

Junior forward Samir Sanu (Edison, NJ/Sayreville) scored 13 points and snared eight rebounds and freshman guard Tim Lucas (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) poured in a career-high 10 and doled out four assists for the Pioneers (4-3, 2-2 NJAC), who shot 46.3 percent (25-for-54) from the floor including 50.0 percent (10-for-20) from 3-point range.

Freshman guard Chadd Barnes (Newark, NJ/University) led the Scarlet Raiders (4-2, 2-2 NJAC), who shot just 25.5 percent (12-for-47), with 12 points. Junior forward Jermont Horton (Irvington, NJ/Irvington), a 2004-05 All-NJAC first-team performer, was held to eight points and five rebounds.

William Paterson jumped out to a 17-2 lead before Rutgers-Newark scored its first field goal, a 3-pointer by Barnes, with 10:14 left in the first half. While the Pioneer defense limited the Scarlet Raiders to 25.0 percent shooting (6-for-24) in the first half, Martinez picked up the scoring slack with 12 points, including a short jumper at the halftime horn that gave his team a 33-20 cushion.

Rutgers-Newark trailed the entire game, but pulled within 43-37 on a 3-pointer by Barnes with 9:26 remaining before the Pioneers went on a 20-2 run as Martinez scored 14 of his points.

William Paterson return to action Saturday, Dec. 10, when it hosts NJAC rival The College of New Jersey at 3 p.m. The Pioneers will hold a Toys for Tots drive at the game. Rutgers-Newark's next contest is the same day at 7:30 p.m. against league opponent Rutgers-Camden at The Golden Dome in Newark.
