UW-Whitewater 70, UW-Stevens Point 64

WHITEWATER, Wis — Men's Basketball ... Warhawks Wins Home Opener Over UW-Stevens Point

UW- Whitewater defeated UW-Stevens Point, 70-64, Wednesday, December 7, at Kachel Gymnasium in Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Both teams are ranked in the "other receiving votes" section of the NCAA Division III poll conducted by D3hoops.com.

Stevens Point led at the half 28-27, and never gave up the lead, with three ties, until 2:22 when Whitewater regained the lead. Mike Toellner (F, so, Mayville) made a lay-up putting Whitewater up 64-62. Whitewater never trailed again winning 70-64. Whitewater went 4-4 from the line in the last two minutes of the game to seal their home opener. UW-Stevens Point is the defending NCAA Division III national champion for the past two seasons, and has been the WIAC champion since 2000.

Whitewater was led by Craig Anderson (F, jr, Mount Prospect, IL/Prospect) with 15 points, shooting 6-9 from the field, and 3-4 behind the arc. Also in double figures were Jeremy Manchester (G, sr, Racine/St. Catherine's) with 11 points, and Rob Perry (F, so, Milwaukee/Dominican) with 10 points. Melvin Williams (F, sr, Milwaukee/Riverside) led the team in rebounds with nine. Whitewater 43.1% from the field, while Stevens Point shot 36.4%. Whitewater made 19 out of 21 free throws in the second half. Stevens Point was led by Pete Rortvedt (G, fr, Minocqua/Lakeland) and Jon Krull (F, jr, Marshall) with 15 each. Pete Rortvedt shot 4-9 from behind the arc. Brian Bauer (F, sr, Auburndale) and Steve Hicklin (G, so, Sussex/Hamilton) also had 11 points each. Brian Bauer led the Pointers with seven rebounds, and Pete Rortvedt led both teams with two blocks.

The Warhawks are now 4-2 overall, 2-0 in the WIAC. UW-Stevens Point is 4-2 and 2-1.

The Warhawks' next game is Saturday, December 10th at 7:00 with UW-Superior visiting the Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
