Stevens Tech fought off a late rally by Drew to secure a 70-65 win in Madison. Waleed Farid led all scores with 20 points including seven in a vital two minute stretch while first-year guard Gerard Mullin led the Rangers with 15 on 5 of 7 shooting from three point range. The Ducks improved to 4-1 on the season while Drew fell to 3-4 on the year.
The Ducks broke the game open after the seven minute mark as they used an 11-2 run to build a 62-51 lead. Farid hit back-to-back layups and a three during the stretch. The sophomore was the only Duck in double figures as the Rangers held Stevens’ top-scorer Tim Williams to just 8 points on the night. Isaac Moore scored on a layup with two minutes remaining and knocked down two free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for the Ducks.
The Rangers rallied from a six point deficit at half to knot the game at 39-39 at the 13 minute mark thanks to layups by Chris Lopez, who scored 10 points to go with three steals, and Ryan Eisner before Mullin hit a triple. The Ducks rebuilt a six point lead, but the scrappy, young Rangers rallied again to bring the game to 51-49. After Stevens’ 11-2 run, Drew fought back to within 4 points with under a minute remaining after threes from Mullin and David Cramer, who scored 12 off the bench to go with five boards and four assists. Bob Carella was the fourth Ranger to reach double figures as the Rangers battled a Ducks squad that had won its two previous matches by 16 and 14 points.
The Rangers will travel to Ursinus on Saturday while the Ducks face off against Brooklyn.
