Augustana 72, Coe 59

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Senior guard Rick Harrigan continues to burn up the nets as he scored 27 points to lead Augustana to a 72-59 victory over Coe in non-conference action. Harrigan made 12 of 21 field goals, one of those a three pointer, with two of four from the free throw line and also contributed three rebounds, two steals and an assist. That led the way for the Vikings, ranked 17th in the latest D3hoops.com national ranking, and helped them up their season’s record to 6-0. It is the first time Augustana has been 6-0 to start the season since 1982-83.

The Vikings led 32-26 at halftime but a 6-0 run to start the second half bumped the margin up to double digits (38-27) following a layup from Jay McAdams-Thornton. The lead would stay around 10 points for the rest of the way, ballooning to 17 (72-55) with 1:10 left on a Harrigan’s final basket. McAdams-Thornton added 19 points on eight of 14 from the floor, one of two from three point range and two of three from the free throw line. He also grabbed seven rebounds and had two steals.

Nate Swetalla had eight points and Joe Caricato shared the rebounding lead with McAdams-Thornton as each had seven. Drew Wessels had a career high eight assists and a pair of steals.

After shooting only .438 (14-32) from the floor in the first half, the Vikings hit at a .552 (16-29) clip in the second half and finished at .492 (30-61) for the game. They narrowly won the rebounding battle by a margin of 34-33 but only committed 12 turnovers for the game.

Mike Kilburg led Coe with 15 points and seven rebounds as the Kohawks fell to 4-2 with the loss.
