Carthage 72, Beloit 69

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (2-5, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) outlasted Beloit College (3-3), 72-69 in overtime, on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage took a 15-point lead late in the first half, 32-17, at 3:45 and led by 10 at the break, 34-24. In the second half, the Red Men opened up a 20-point lead, 58-38, at 9:57 before things got out of hand. The Redmen went scoreless for the next four minutes and managed only a single field goal over the next eight minutes, as the Buccaneers put together an unbelievable 25-2 run to take a three-point lead, 63-60, with 23 seconds to go in regulation. Trey Bowens hit one free throw with 16 seconds to go to cut the lead to 63-62, and Kyle Jeffery hit another with six seconds left to tie the game at 63-63 and send it into overtime. Beloit took a three-point lead in overtime, 66-63, at 4:19 before Trey Bowens knotted things at 66-66 with a three-pointer at 3:14. A Navarro Thompson layup at 1:54 made it 68-66. Three Kyle Jeffery free throws, one at 22 seconds and the other two at 12 seconds, made it 71-66, but Matt Fieck’s three-pointer at seven seconds made it a 71-69 contest. Navarro Thompson’s free throw with 6.5 seconds closed out the scoring at 72-69. Before Thompson connected on the free throw, the game was delayed for 10 minutes when the main Fieldhouse lights went out. Carthage shot 41 percent (26-63), while Beloit shot 39 percent (27-69). Four Carthage players scored in double figures. Mike Hart scored 17 points on six-of-11 field goals and five-of-seven free throws, along with nine rebounds. Trey Bowens had 16 points, Kyle Jeffery 15 points and five rebounds, and Mark Morrison chipped in 10 points. Beloit’s Josh Hinz led all scorers with 21 points on seven-of-18 from the floor, six-of-six from the free-throw line and a game-high 12 boards. Carthage plays host to No. 9 Lawrence University (5-0) on Sunday, Dec. 11 (4 p.m.), also at the Carthage PEC.
