Carleton 75, Augsburg 53

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Zach Johnson (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) led all scorers with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists, leading Carleton College to a 75-53 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.

All five Carleton starters scored in double figures, as the Knights picked up their first MIAC victory of the season after starting the conference campaign with three losses. Carleton is now 3-4 overall, 1-3 in league play.

Justin Kozlowski (So., Wausau, Wis./Wausau Newman HS) scored 13 points to lead Augsburg, now 2-5 overall, 1-3 in MIAC play.

The Knights jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first 5:05 of play and did not trail after that, expanding the lead to 35-23 at halftime. Carleton pulled away to lead by as many as 29 points in the second half.

Jake Phillips (Jr., Brainerd, Minn.) had 15 points and four assists, while Dan Forkrud (Sr., Rosemount, Minn.) had 13 points, four assists and two steals for the Knights. Tommy Drake (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Brian Sharkey (Sr., Bow, N.H./St. Paul's HS) had 10 points.

Carleton shot 60.8 percent (31-of-51) from the field, including 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from three-point range. Carleton recorded 25 assists on its 31 field goals, and outrebounded Augsburg by a 33-27 margin.

Darren Nelson (So., Richfield, Minn.) scored 10 points for Augsburg, while Grant Hemmingsen (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Kevin Keto (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn.) scored nine points apiece. Dan Graf (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had five points and three steals.

Augsburg shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field, including 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) from three-point range.

Carleton hosts Bethany Lutheran in a nonconference game on Saturday (12/10) at 3 p.m. Augsburg returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 17, with a 7 p.m. nonconference game against Waldorf College (Iowa).
