Allegheny 100, Westminster (Pa.) 98

MEADVILLE, Pa. — In a game in which Casey McCloskey (Erie/Cathedral Prep) dished out a career-high 10 assists, it was his running layup with six seconds left in the game (pictured below) that gave the Gators the 100-98 victory in a high-scoring non-conference matchup with the Titans of Westminster College.

Matt" class="red" rel=nofollow>http://www.allegheny.edu/athletics/menbb/0506/images/McCloskeyWestminster.jpg">Matt Majzlik (Monaca/Hopewell) led five Gators in double figures, scoring a game-high 28 points on 14-of-26 shooting, while Ryan Hollihan (Saxonburg/Knoch) and Jimmy Savage (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) each reached career highs with 18 points. McCloskey and Ben Torsney (Morgantown, W.Va.) each put up 14.

Westminster reached the scoreboard first with a three-point basket by Mark DeMonaco, before the Gators rattled off the next dozen points, taking a 12-3 lead just over three minutes into the game. Westminster clawed back, taking a one-point lead with 13:07 to play in the first half before the Gators rattled off 16 of the next 20 points in the game, as the team would not trail for the remainder of the game. Westminster (1-5) closed to within six before McCloskey hit a 35-foot three-point basket as time expired to send the Gators into the locker room with a 59-50 halftime lead.

The second-half lead grew to as many as 14 halfway through the period before Westminster started chipping away at the lead, eventually tying the game at 98 apiece with 12 seconds left before McCloskey beat the clock again, this one with a layup with six seconds left in the game before picking off a steal with four seconds left to seal the win.

Overall" class="red" rel=nofollow>http://www.allegheny.edu/athletics/menbb/0506/images/SavageWestminster.jpg">Overall , the Gators hit 44-of-81 shots in the game, a percentage of 54.3, while dishing out 25 assists against just 19 turnovers. The 100 points was a season high for the Gators, while the 98 points for Westminster is a season-low.

Majzlik and Hollihan each pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the team, as the Gators out-rebounded Westminster 51-40. McCloskey dished out 10 assists while Savage dished out five, also a career-high. Savage (right) pilfered a game-high five steals while blocking a team-high two shots, both career highs.

Craig Hannon led the Titans with 24 points while Steve Bielich and Nick DiNatale scored 15 and 14 points respectively. Bielich pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds, while blocking seven shots.

The next game for the Blue and Gold is on Saturday, December 10 when the team travels to Delaware, Ohio to face off against the Ohio Wesleyan Bishops in the second game of a men’s/women’s double header.
