Washington College 83, Haverford 81

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Senior guard Kyle Stem scored 23 of his career-high 34 points in the final 5:06 of the game and hit the game-winning lay-up with one second remaining to rally host Washington College back from a 14-point deficit and to an 83-81 Centennial Conference men's basketball win over visiting Haverford this evening at Cain Athletic Center.

The Shoremen (3-4, 2-1 Centennial) held a 35-34 lead at halftime, but the Fords (2-4, 1-2) scored the first six points of the second half to take a 40-35 lead with 18:13 left. Haverford stretched the lead to 14 points a lay-up by Dave Nowacki with 6:47 remaining which made the score 67-53.

Haverford maintained a 69-57 lead when Stem caught fire. Stem hit a three-pointer with 5:06 left to cut the lead to 69-60 and start his hot streak. The Fords were up 73-63 with 3:52 to go before Stem hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to 73-69 with 3:09 left. After Nowacki made one of two free throws with 2:56 to play, Stem drained two charity tosses and then a jumper to trim the lead to 74-73 with 1:36 left.

John Elefterakis made one of two free throws 1:23 left to give the Fords a two-point advantage, but Stem made two more free throws with 1:16 left to tie the game at 75-75. Washington freshman guard Tim Kohlrus made one of two free throws with 48 seconds left to give the Shoremen a 76-75 lead and Stem knocked down another three-pointer with 29 seconds left to make it 79-75 in favor of the Shoremen. Elefterakis answered with a three of his own four seconds later to pull the Fords to within one at 79-78.

Senior guard Travis Moore made two free throws with 24 seconds left to push the Washington lead to 81-78, but Elefterakis knocked down another triple to knot the score at 81-81 with 13 seconds remaining. The Shoremen inbounded the ball and advanced it past half court before calling timeout. After the timeout, Stem received the ball to the left of the key and drove past Elefterakis to lay in the game-winning bucket with one second to go. A last-second heave from near full-court by Elefterakis caromed off the backboard as Washington came away with the win.

Senior forward Jonathan Webb added 16 points and seven rebounds in the win for the Shoremen, while Moore finished with 12 points.
