Shenandoah 102, Southern Virginia 87

WINCHESTER, Va. - — Shenandoah University cracked the 100-point barrier for the first time in five seasons Tuesday night in a 102-87 men's basketball victory over NAIA Southern Virginia.


Shenandoah (5-2) had not reached 100 points since defeating Averett University 100-80 on January 12, 2002, a span of 100 games.


The Hornets reached the century mark on a http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=489"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Jeremiah Lawrence layup with 43 seconds left; this made the score 101-85 and was the penultimate point in a 7-0 SU run to finish the game.


Southern Virginia (4-9) had trailed by 22 points, 93-71, with 3:09 remaining but hit four 3-pointers in the next 92 seconds to get back into the contest.


Following a Shenandoah time-out, the Hornets got a pair of free throws from both http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=832"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Lenzie Adams and http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=842"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Mike Nickens-Turner and a defensive rebound by http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=837"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Moutkar Fawehinmi to set up Lawrence' layup off of the break.


Lawrence bucket and the final point, a Nickens-Turner free throw, capped t a season high 60-point second half for the Hornets. SU shot a sizzling 17 of 27 (63.0 percent) from the field in the final 20 minutes of play at it opened up a 26-point lead by the 6:24 mark.


This lead remained at least 20 points until the Knights would start their three-point barrage to finish the game with a Tanner Johnson trey with 3:47 left.

Shenandoah is off until December 17 when it travels to the University of Mary Washington for a 2:00 contest.
