Messiah 69, Salisbury 56

GRANTHAM, Pa. — The Salisbury University men’s basketball team fell behind 35-28 at intermission and couldn’t overcome the Falcons of Messiah College (5-2) Tuesday night as the Sea Gulls had their two-game winning streak snapped with a 69-56 setback on the road.

Salisbury hit only 36.7% (11-of-30) from the field and 0-of-7 from behind the three-point arc in the opening half as the Sea Gulls dropped off the pace early. Rico Stewart scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to secure the comeback for the Gulls (5-4).

Segun Odumeru connected on 8-of-12 from the field and led Salisbury with 17 points, to go along with four boards. Justin Rice added 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and Ray Williams dropped in six points and Derrick Washington scored five points.

The Sea Gulls were kept off the boards, finishing with 26 rebounds, compared to 39 for the Falcons.

Zach Wiernicki paced Messiah College with 18 points, to go long with nine boards. Quinn McCullough scored 13 points and had four rebounds. Steve King scored 11 point and had five rebounds.

The Falcons hit 13-of-31 field goals (41.9%) in the first half and held a 21-17 rebounding advantage to open up an early lead.

Messiah won the game despite Salisbury turning the ball over just 10 times, while the Falcons committed 18.

The Sea Gulls will close out the 2005 portion of their schedule Saturday when they host Capital Athletic Conference foe York College at 4 p.m. at the Maggs Center.
