Johns Hopkins 80, McDaniel 59

BALTIMORE — A 21-point, 16-rebound performance by junior Danny Nawrocki lifted Johns Hopkins (5-2, 3-0 Centennial) past McDaniel (3-4, 1-1), 80-59, in Centennial Conference men's basketball on Tuesday night at Goldfarb Gym.

Nawrocki, the reigning conference player of the week, delivered his second game with 20 or more points this season and his team-leading third double-double (points-rebounds).

Hopkins jumped out to a 39-23 lead at the half, holding McDaniel to only 22.6 percent shooting from the field.

A pair of three-pointers by the Green Terror to open the second half closed the lead to 10, at 39-29. However, a 12-4 Hopkins run in the first six minutes of the period put the game out of reach. The Blue Jays would later raise their advantage to as much as 27, going up 72-45 with 5:28 remaining.

Hopkins finished the game shooting 54.4 percent (31-57) from the field, while the Green Terror made only 33.3 percent (20-60) of their field goals.

The Blue Jays out-rebounded the Green Terror, 53-21, including 16 Hopkins offensive boards.

Three other scorers reached double figures for Hopkins, including junior Matt Griffin with 15. Griffin was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw stripe.

McDaniel sophomore Josh McKay had 17 points, making 7-of-13 attempts from the field. Senior Will Talesnick also made it into double-figures, scoring 14 points.

This was the 11th straight win for Hopkins over McDaniel at Goldfarb Gym, dating back to 1995-96.

The Blue Jays return to action for the final time in the 2005 calendar year, traveling to Dickinson on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest.
