Hamilton 88, SUNYIT 75

CLINTON, N.Y. — Tim Welchons '06 scored 22 points to lead Hamilton College to an 88-75 non-league win against SUNY Institute of Technology and spoil former head coach Tom Murphy's return to Scott Field House on Dec. 6.

Murphy coached Hamilton (6-0 overall) to 602 victories in 34 seasons from 1970 to 2004. He is in his first season as head coach at SUNY IT (3-2).

Welchons has scored 20 or more points in four of his last five games. He also handed out five assists. Nick Jones '07 posted his first double-double this season with season highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Tsakane Ngobeni '07 came off the bench to score 13 points, grab eight rebounds and block four shots. Ngobeni went 6-for-7 from the field.

Chris Reaves '07 scored a game-high 24 points, dished out five assists and made four steals for the Wildcats. Chantal Bien-Aime '06 added 14 points as he went 4-for-8 from three-point range. Antoine Gilkes '07 tossed in 11 points and pulled down a game-high 15 boards. Chris Plante '07 chipped in 10 points in a reserve role.

The Continentals made 12-of-14 free throw attempts and shot 47.8 percent (33-69) from the field. SUNY IT made just 37.5 percent (30-80) of its shots and went 5-for-16 (31.3 percent) at the foul line.

Hamilton scored the game's first nine points and 4:10 was gone before the Wildcats finally made a basket. SUNY IT came back to take a 22-18 lead with 7:31 left, but the Continentals scored the next eight points for a 26-22 advantage with 5:59 remaining. Hamilton pushed the lead to 13 points at 44-31 at the half. The Continentals were up by 21 at 71-50 midway through the second half when the Wildcats mounted a furious rally. SUNY IT went on a 21-4 run to get within four points at 75-71, but didn't get any closer. Hamilton ended the game on a 13-4 run to remain undefeated.
