The Wildcats, who led from the opening tip, remained in control of the game for the entire second half. The squad’s up-and-down play and full-court pressure forced the Spartans out of rhythm as they shot just 31 percent from the field over the course of the game (21-for-67) and committed 17 turnovers.
The Wildcats dominated the inside game by cleaning the backboards and taking advantage of second-chance opportunities. Bryan Bishop (’06, Watertown / South Jefferson HS) and Steven Zavackis (’07, Carthage / Carthage HS) both finished with double-digit rebounds on the day. Zavackis pulled down ten rebounds (six on the offensive glass) and finished with six points, four assists and three blocks. Bishop, who finished with his first double-double of the season, pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and scored 13 points. The Wildcats out-rebounded the Spartans 57-46 on the day.
Stephen Harris (’09, Watervliet / Watervliet HS) continued to dominate from the outside with his incredibly accurate marksmanship from the three-point arc. Harris went 6-for-13 from beyond the arc and finished the game with 20 points, seven rebounds and a steal. Harris improved his season 3-point field goal average to 44 percent.
The Wildcats are next in action on Thurs., Dec. 8. Cazenovia is slated to take on the Utica College Pioneers in a 7:00 PM non-conference match up at the Cazenovia College Athletics Center.
The Wildcats women’s basketball squad was defeated by the Lady Spartans, in the opening game of the doubleheader, 42-76. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 0-5 on the year and 0-1 in NEAC play. D’Youville improved to 3-5 with the win and 2-0 in NEAC play.
The Wildcats couldn’t find an answer for D’Youville’s dynamic duo of sophomore guard Rachel Placito and 6”4’ freshman center Christine Halter. Placito shot an astounding 6-for-8 from three and finished the day with 21 points in 24 minutes of work. Halter scored 14 and tied for a team-high and game-high nine rebounds with teammate Amanda Souter. As a team, the Lady Spartans out rebounded the Wildcats 29-52.
Ashley Agresta (’06, Amsterdam / Galway HS) finished the game with a team-leading 14 points and a team-leading six rebounds for the Wildcats. Agresta also racked up a career-high five steals in the effort. Going 5-for-6 from the line, Agresta is now shooting 85 percent from the charity-stripe.
