Carnegie Mellon 99, Lycoming 83

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) — The Carnegie Mellon men’s basketball team and their high-flying fast paced play improved to 7-0 on Tuesday, December 6 after they handed the visiting Lycoming College Warriors a 99-83 defeat in Skibo Gymnasium. The Tartans up their record to 7-0, while the Warriors dip under .500 to 3-4.

Carnegie Mellon’s senior forward Nate Maurer needed only four seconds to put the Tartans on top 2-0 when he made a lay-up off a pass from fellow senior forward Clayton Barlow-Wilcox. The Tartans never relinquished the lead and a lay-up by junior Greg Gonzalez off a pass from sophomore Geoff Kozak brought the score to 50-35 heading into halftime. Maurer scored 12 of his 16 points in the first period.

Lycoming was able to cut the Carnegie Mellon lead to under double-digits on numerous occasions in the second half, only to have the Tartans respond right away. A lay-up by Tartan senior forward Marques Johnson made the score 71-61 with 9:26 to go, and the Tartans stayed in control the rest of the way.

Six Tartans hit double figures in points, with Johnson and Barlow-Wilcox leading the way with 17 points apiece. Johnson tied his career-high in points and recorded six rebounds and five assists. Barlow-Wilcox hauled down 10 rebounds to record his fourth double-double of the season. Carnegie Mellon received strong bench play as senior Bary Dunn chipped in with 16 points, including three dunks, and junior Brad Matta added a career-high 12 points. Senior guard A.J. Straub was the sixth Tartan in double figures, as he contributed 10 points on 2-3 shooting from three-point range. Lycoming was led by senior Jonathan Pribble’s 23 points and seven rebounds.

The Tartans run and gun offense shot 60% for the game and collected 22 assists to 15 turnovers, while Lycoming shot 49% and had 11 assists and 14 turnovers. Carnegie Mellon dominated on the boards and in points in the paint, out-rebounding the Warriors 40-24, and outscoring the Warriors 62-36 in the paint.

The Carnegie Mellon men’s basketball team will suit up next on Friday, December 9 when they travel to play Skidmore College in what is scheduled to be a 7:00 p.m. tip. The Tartans next home game is not until January 20 when they host conference opponent Case Western Reserve University.
