St. John's 77, Carleton 69

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — Led by senior wing Paul Henrichs, the Saint John’s University basketball team earned its third win of the season over Carleton, 77-69, in conference play. Henrichs became the 29th player in SJU basketball history to surpass the 1,000th-point mark. Henrichs needed just seven points to reach 1,000, and he finished the game with 19 points.

The Johnnies (3-1 overall, 2-1 MIAC) found themselves trailing the Carleton Knights 34-to-33 at halftime. In the first half, SJU shot just one-of-five from behind the arc and was 12-of-21 from the field.

SJU’s Henrichs scored his 1,000th career point with 11:08 left in the first half.

The second half the Johnnies boosted their shooting as they improved their three-point shooting, netting five-of-seven for 71.4% from behind the arc. Sophomore Brady Brink sparked SJU in the second half, shooting four-of-four from the field, including two three-pointers in 18 minutes of play.

Carleton tied the game at 54-to-54 with 9:29 remaining in the second half, however the Johnnies were quick to regain the lead and never looked back. The Johnnies would go on to earn a 77-69 win over the Knights, collecting their third win of the season and second win in the MIAC.

Saint John’s was led by senior Paul Henrichs, who notched his first double-double of the season with 19 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot. Junior guard Ryan Lieser netted 16 points, five assists and two steals. SJU’s Brady Brink tallied 14 points, along with five rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot in 35 minutes of play.

The Knights were led by Zach Johnson, who scored 19 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out one assist. Carleton had two more players in double figures. Tommy Drake finished the game with 15 points and Dan Forkrud finished the game with 17 points and three rebounds.

SJU’s head coach, Jim Smith, improves his overall career record to 637-446.
