Augustana 76, Rockford 69

ROCKFORD, Ill. — The Augustana Vikings, ranked 17th in the just released D3hoops.com NCAA Division III national ranking, picked up a 76-69 victory over Rockford in non-conference action on Monday, December 5 at the Seaver Gym in Rockford, Illinois. For a half it looked like it was going to be easy but in the end it turned out to be anything but that.

The Vikings shot .600 (15-25) from the field in the first half and led by as many as 27 points (41-14) before settling in for a 41-17 advantage at intermission. The game was tied 2-2 when Augustana went on a 24-1 run that resulted in a 26-3 lead with 7:42 left to play in the opening stanza. In that run six different players scored with Rick Harrigan leading the way with 12 points, including the last 10.

In the second half it was a different story as the Regents came out with a 16-4 spurt of their own and when Jacob Dunkel nailed a pair of free throws with 14:31 left the lead was down to 12 (45-33). Eventually the lead would get down to just three points (69-63) at 1:13 following a basket by Dunkel. Shaun Rose grabbed an offensive rebound after a Harrigan miss and scored with :39 left to push the advantage back up to five. One free throw by Harrigan and four from Drew Wessels in the final :27 sealed the win.

In the second half, Rockford outscored the Vikings 52-35 and after shooting just .222 (six for 27) in the first half, ripped the cords at a .600 (18-30) clip in the final 20 minutes. By contrast, Augustana shot just .391 (nine of 23) in the final half . Harrigan led the Vikings in scoring with 25 points while Jay McAdams-Thornton added 15 and Rose contributed 10. McAdams-Thornton grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds but Augustana was beaten on the boards by a margin of 36-28.

The Regents got 25 points from Dunkel, 13 out of Maurice Smith and 12 from Dupree Powell. Dunkel had 12 rebounds.

Augustana, which is now 5-0 for the first time since 1986-87, got four assists and five steals from Wessels. Rockford fell to 3-4 on the season with the loss.
