EWING, N.J. — COLD-SHOOTING ROYALS SUFFER 53-42 SETBACK AT THE COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY

The University of Scranton shot a season-low 30.0 percent from the field (15 of 50) to suffer a 53-42 loss to The College of New Jersey in non-conference action Monday evening at Packer Hall.

Scranton, whose 42-point total was its lowest since a 41-40 loss at Delaware Valley College on February 3, 1982, had a two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 5-2. The College of New Jersey, which shook off a 7-for-26 effort (26.9 percent) in the first half by connecting on 7 of 12 field goal attempts (58.3 percent) after intermission, improved to 5-1.

Junior Mike McGowan led the Royals with nine points in 20 minutes of action and junior center Mike Kreuter and sophomore point-guard Randy Arnold added eight apiece. Center Scott Findlay led the Lions with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Matt Diamond came off the bench to contribute 17 points.

Despite shooting only 27.3 percent from the field (6 of 22) in the first-half, the Royals found themselves down by only five, 21-16, by intermission.

Diamond started an 11-2 run with a 3-pointer in the opening six minutes of the second-half as the Lions built up a 9-point lead, 32-23. Kreuter scored four points and McGowan buried back-to-back 3-pointers as Scranton countered with a 10-0 spurt to take a 33-32 lead with 10:46 remaining. The Royals then scored only four points over the next seven minutes as the Lions, behind 8 points by Diamond, took advantage of Scranton’s inability to put the ball in the basket to build up an 11-point lead, 47-36, with 3:05 left.

The Lions’ final six points of the game came from the free throw line. The College of New Jersey connected on 14 of 19 free throw attempts in the second-half to finish 20-for-29 (69.0 percent) for the game.

Scranton will take on the Greyhounds of Moravian College this Saturday, December 10, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
