Case Western Reserve 84, Thiel 58

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Thiel College men's basketball team shot just 27 percent from the field in its 84-58 loss to Case Western Reserve University Monday evening at Horshburgh Stadium in Cleveland.

Case Western (5-1) shot 50.9 percent from the field and finished with a distinct 58-26 advantage in rebounds. Funso Lafe paced the Spartans with 18 points, while Carson Oren added 11 points and 15 rebounds. Tyler Rodriguez chipped in with 16 points and six boards.

Sophomore guard Jason Manningham led the Tomcats (1-4) with 12 points on four-of-five shooting from beyond the three-point line. Sophomore forward Joe Herrmann added nine points and four rebounds.

Thiel assumed a nine-point lead (24-15) with just under 10 minutes gone in the opening half on a Manningham three-pointer. Case Western used an 11-2 run over the next 3:22 to pull even at 26-26 before outscoring the Tomcats 13-2 over the final 6:17 of the half. The Spartans went into the locker room sporting a 39-28 halftime lead.

A Herrmann jumper at the 14:25 mark trimmed the Case Western lead to just seven (44-37), but the Spartans went on to extend their lead to as many as 29 (82-53) before posting the 26-point win.

Thiel will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 8 when they host Penn State DuBois at 7:30 p.m.
