Calvin (5-3) stretched its win streak to three games with an 84-64 victory over Wheaton (2-3) on the second day of competition at the CCIW/MIAA Challenge hosted by Hope College at the DeVos Fieldhouse.
Calvin used a 9-2 run over the final three minutes of the first half to build a 40-28 halftime lead. Calvin then maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half to pull away for its second straight victory over Wheaton, marking the first time since 2001 that the Knights have posted victories in back-to-back years against the Thunder.
Calvin once again used the three-point shot to its advantage, connecting on 12-of-15 (.800) from beyond the arc including 10-of-12 in the first half.
Senior Andy Draayer led Calvin in scoring with 21 points, going 7-for-7 from the field, 6-for-6 from three-point range and 1-for-1 at the free throw line while also grabbing four rebounds and picking up a pair of assists.
Senior Kyle Trewhella also had a superb afternoon, scoring 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting while dishing out six assists and grabbing five rebounds. Trewhella was also 5-for-6 from three-point range.
Also reaching double-digits in scoring for the Knights were freshman Caleb Veldhouse with 13 points and junior Kyle Snoeyink with 11 points. Freshman Dustin Smith chipped in with eight points off the bench.
Wheaton was led in defeat by Jordan Kemper’s 17-point effort while Johnnie Standard had 15 points and John Mohan 11.
Calvin shot 54.5 percent overall from the floor including 59.3 percent in the second half. Wheaton shot just 38.2 percent from the floor and shot just 57.1 percent (16-of-28) from the free throw line. Calvin also struggled at the line, hitting just 12-of-24 at the charity stripe.
In Saturday’s second CCIW/MIAA Challenge game, Hope defeated Carthage 74-61. The Hope victory completed a clean 4-0 sweep over the CCIW on the weekend as Calvin defeated Carthage 82-78 and Hope defeated Wheaton 93-67 on Friday night. Now in its second year of competition, the CCIW/MIAA Challenge sees the MIAA holding a 5-3 overall series lead.
