Widener 70, Susquehanna 46

SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Senior Kris Clarkson continued his red-hot play with 23 points and 12 rebounds, helping Widener keep its perfect record intact with a 70-46 Commonwealth Conference pounding of Susquehanna.

Clarkson had 12 points and eight rebounds in the opening half, during which Widener (7-0, 2-0 CC) shot 50 percent (15-of-30) from the floor to build a 37-24 lead. Susquehanna (1-4, 0-2) was limited to just 31 percent (9-of-29).

The Pioneers continued their shooting exhibition in the second half, converting 60 percent (15-of-25) to help them hit 55 percent (30-of-55) overall. Their defense also was on display as the Crusaders closed hitting only 32 percent (18-of-56).

For Clarkson, it was his fifth double-double of the season and third straight. It was his first game since posting career highs of 31 points and 17 rebounds Tuesday against Lebanon Valley. He is averaging 19.9 points and 12.3 rebounds this season.

Malcolm Thomas poured in 16 points and fellow junior Essien Ford netted 15 for Widener. Junior Terry Smith grabbed seven rebounds for the Pioneers, who owned a 40-30 advantage.

Matt Effler scored 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting for Susquehanna.

Widener’s next step is seeking its first 8-0 start since the 1968-69 squad went 20-0. The team’s next game is Thursday at Philadelphia Biblical, beginning at 8:00 pm.
