Sewanee 81, Centre 76

SEWANEE, Tenn. — Centre men fall to Sewanee in SCAC opener

The Centre College men's basketball team dropped its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opening game 81-76 to Sewanee-University of the South, Saturday, Dec. 3, in Sewanee, Tenn.

The loss drops the Colonels to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in league play, while Sewanee improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the SCAC.

The two teams entered the locker room at halftime with the Tigers holding a 34-31 advantage. Centre shot 41.9% (13-31) from the field in the first half, while Sewanee was 13-38 (34.2%) from the floor. The Tigers made two more three pointers and one more free throw for the three point lead.

The Colonels shot almost 7% better in the second half at 48.3% (14-29), however, Sewanee shot almost 18% better shooting 62.1% (18-29) in the second period. Centre made more three-pointers and free throws in the game, but made four less shots for the game.

Sophomore guard Matt Nestheide paced the Colonels with a career-high 24 points on 7-13 shooting, including 4-7 from the three-point line and 6-9 from the charity stripe. Nestheide also posted five rebounds and three assists.

Senior center Reggie Magnusson and junior forward Matt Jacobson also scored in double-figures for the Colonels. Jacobson tallied 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Magnusson added 14 points in the loss.

Centre will next play Transylvania University, Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Lexington, Ky. The game will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and begin at 8:30 p.m.
