With the win, the Polar Bears improve to 5-0 (1-0 OAC), while the Purple Raiders fall to 1-5 (0-1 OAC).
Nothern had four players score in double figures. Sophomore Kyle Gehle scored 18 points, junior Bart Hostetler chipped in 12 points a game-high six rebounds and senior Nate Lieb added 10 points for Ohio Northern.
Badenhop has scored 20 or more points in each of ONU’s first five games.
Northern grabbed the lead early in the first half off of three 3-pointers by Badenhop and pushed the lead to 27-11 at the 11:04 mark.
The Polar Bears extended their lead to 50-29 by the end of the first half.
ONU continued their offensive assult in the second half and Mount Union fell behind 84-55 with 4:55 left in the game.
A three-pointer by Gehle with 13:02 left, gave ONU their largest lead of the game 69-43.
“We played a tough team that was well coached,” said Ohio Northern head coach Jeff Coleman. “It was a great win for the team, especially for an OAC opener and we played hard the entire game.”
The Polar Bears hit on 36-of-63 field goals for 57.1 percent, while holding the Purple Raiders to 19-of-50 shooting for 38.0 percent. ONU hit 13-of-28 from three-point range for 46.4 percent and MC made only 6-of-18 from beyond the arc for 33.8 percent.
The Purple Raiders were lead by Chris Switzer who scored 18 points. Mount Union had two other players score in double figures, Kyle Karpinski added 12 points and Eric Fender scored 10 points and a game high six rebounds.
The Polar Bears will return to action Wednesday for a 7:30 tip-off against area rival Defiance in a non-confernce matchup at the ONU Sports Center.
