Mass-Dartmouth 61, Southern Maine 56

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA — It took the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team nearly 39 minutes to shake stubborn Southern Maine in their Little East Conference opener at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.

A basket by junior center Dan Holbrook gave the Corsairs the lead for good with 2:39 remaining and UMass Dartmouth went on to a 61-56 victory over the Huskies.

UMD jumped to an early 9-4 lead, but Southern Maine came back, scoring 11 consecutive points to take a 19-13 lead midway through the first half. USM held the Corsairs to 42.9 per cent from the field in the first half, and led, 35-27, at the intermission.

An 18-10 UMD run left the game tied at 45 with 11 minutes remaining. The teams battled back and forth, and UMass Dartmouth finally took the lead for good on Holbrook’s late basket. Junior forwards Paul Pawlowski and Stephane Abelard each hit a basket in the final minute, and the Corsairs added four free throws to preserve their advantage.

“We played well at the start of the game, then they went to a zone, and our offense became stagnant,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. “At halftime, we were reminded of what we had to do against a zone. We came out and hit a few threes, got the lead back, and got them out of the zone, and we were successful.”

Holbrook led the Corsairs with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Abelard added 13 points and Pawlowski contributed 12 points and six assists as UMD made 52.2 per cent of their shots in the second half and limited Southern Maine to 23.1 per cent while outscoring the Huskies, 34-21.

Josh Daniels of USM led all scorers with 23 points. Daniels and Bill Hardwick each had seven rebounds.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 3-3, 1-0 in Little East play with the victory, while Southern Maine fell to 2-3 and 0-1. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Brandeis Thursday evening.
