MIT 75, Polytechnic 42

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The MIT women’s basketball team overpowered visiting Polytechnic University, 75-42, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers’ (3-2) victory was truly a team effort as the bench contributed 39 points, accounting for 52% of the scoring. Clara Yuan paced MIT with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and hitting 2-of-4 from three-point range. Elizabeth Clifton posted a game-high 18 points for the Blue Jays (3-2).

The Engineers led from the start with a basket by Kimberly Soo Hoo and a lay-up from Yuan in the opening minute. Jacky Calandriello put Polytechnic on the board by sinking one of two shots from the charity stripe. A jumper from Tech’s Karen Kinnaman was answered with a lay-up from Partch at 15:38. This was as close as it would get for the Blue Jays as MIT tallied 15 unanswered points during the next 2:38 to take a 21-3 lead. The Engineers entered the intermission with a comfortable 41-20 advantage, registering 19 points off of Polytechnic’s turnovers.

MIT continued to roll in the second stanza as it extended its margin to as many as 36 points (71-35) with 2:48 remaining in the game. Soo Hoo had a solid effort for the Engineers, totaling 10 points, eight assists and a team-high six rebounds. Kinnaman notched a game-high seven steals and contributed 10 points as well. Michal Ruchelsman led the bench scoring with seven points while Cheryl Kwinn and Cherelle Walls each added six.

Calandriello collected a game-high 20 rebounds and tallied eight points and two blocks. Partch posted 11 points while Sarah Walter grabbed eight caroms.

The next game for MIT will be on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7:00 p.m. when it hosts Westfield State College.
