Kean 75, New Jersey 68

UNION, N.J. — Freshman guard Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.) scored a career-high 26 points and hit seven three-pointers to lead Kean University past The College of New Jersey, 75-68, in New Jersey Athletic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon. The victory improved Kean to 5-0 overall, 3-0 in the conference, while TCNJ dropped to 2-4 overall, 1-2 in the NJAC.

The Cougars took an early six-point lead, 12-6, seven minutes into the contest, as Beyruti knocked down a pair of treys and freshman guard Ebony Jackson (Newark, N.J.) added four points in the opening minutes.

TCNJ responded with nine straight points and would build its largest lead of the game, a seven point edge at 24-17 with 6:36 remaining in the first half. Kean cut the deficit to one, before TCNJ took a four-point lead into halftime at 34-30.

In the opening half, Beyruti had 13 points and five rebounds to lead the Coguars, while senior guard Alexa Shields (Oakhurst, N.J.) had 10 points for TCNJ.

The two teams traded leads early in the second half, as neither team led by more than four points. With the game tied 54-54 after back-to-back three-pointers by TCNJ guard Megan Hueter (Haddon Heights, N.J.) and a layup by Kean junior forward Chi Clark (Maplewood, N.J.), Beyruti gave the Cougars the lead for good on her sixth three-pointer of the game.

In the victory, Beyruti connected on 7-of-11 from long range, as her seven three-pointers were the second highest single game total in school history. Also for Kean, Clark finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double, while Jackson finished with 10 points, six assists and five steals. Sophomore guard Allison Summerset (Mays Landing, N.J.) scored eight points and added two rebounds in 12 minutes of action off the bench.

For TCNJ, sophomore guard Sara Best (High Bridge, N.J.) led the Lions with 17 points and five rebounds off the bench, while Hueter finished with 12 points and three assists and senior forward Erin Frank (Toms Rivers, N.J.) had nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Shields was held scoreless in the second half, but contributed six assists in the period to finish the game with a game-high seven assists.

The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, December 7, when they host Rowan University in NJAC action at 6 p.m.
