Hope 75, Carthage 61

HOLLAND, Mich. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (1-4, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to No. 14 Hope College (6-0), 75-61, on Saturday, Dec. 3 at the second-annual CCIW/MIAA Men’s Basketball Classic at Hope College’s newly-opened DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland, Mich. The Red Men lost to Calvin College (4-3), 82-78, on Friday, Dec. 2, while Hope (5-0) defeated CCIW-member Wheaton College (Ill., 2-2), 93-67. On Saturday, Dec. 3, Calvin (5-3) defeated Wheaton (Ill., 2-3), 84-64. Carthage plays host to Carroll College (Wis.) on Monday, Dec. 5 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis.

In the Hope game, Carthage saw a 17-point first-half lead disappear in the second period. The Red Men jumped out to a 14-6 lead at 14:58. Carthage led by as much as 17 points, 29-12, at 6:34, before the Flying Dutchmen closed out the half with a 17-4 run to cut the lead to 33-29 at the break. The Red Men took an eight-point lead early in the second half, 39-31, at 17:34, before Hope went on a 15-4 run to take its first lead of the game, 46-43, at 13:29 on a three-pointer by Marcus Vanderheide. The Flying Dutchmen extended the run to 20-4 to take an eight-point lead, 51-43, at 12:44. Hope made it a 14-point game, 60-46, at 9:40. Carthage got no closer than eight points the rest of the way, 66-58, at 4:02, as Hope goes on to win by 14, 75-61. Carthage shot 45 percent (24-53), while Hope shot 40 percent (22-55). Carthage’s Keena Johnson and Trey Bowens each had 12 points, while Johnson added seven rebounds. Navarro Thompson added 11 points. Andy Phillips led Hope with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Eric Voisin had 17 points and nine boards.
