In a game with outlandish statistics, Tiger sophomore forward Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) led all players with 25 points as seven different Tigers scored in double figures. Junior guard Kevin Forrester (Wytheville, VA/George Wythe) tallied 19 points, while sophomore Tyler Murray (Atlanta, GA/Harrison) had 18 and freshman Byron Lawton (High Point, NC/Wesleyan) 13 as all three scored career-highs, while 12 different players scored at least four points for Hampden-Sydney.
Meanwhile, sophomore guard Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School) tallied his first career double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds, while senior guard Matt Guill (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) finished with 14 points and a season-high seven assists. Junior guard Mike Edwards (Richmond, VA/Steward) shook off an ankle injury that forced him to miss all but five minutes of H-SC’s last outing versus Virginia Wesleyan to score 11 and give the Tigers seven in double-figures.
“We did a great job of handling Emory and Henry’s pressure and the flow of that game,” said Tiger head coach Bubba Smith. “Our goals coming into the game were to have less than 25 turnovers and out-rebound them and we accomplished both those. Overall, I thought we showed great mental toughness and stayed focused throughout the entire game.”
The Tigers out-rebounded Emory and Henry, 71-31, as the Wasps shot just 32 percent (32-for-100) from the floor and 22 percent (14-for-65) from three-point range. On the flip side, Hampden-Sydney was a blistering 68 percent (56-for-82) from the floor, attempted just one three pointer (0-for-1) and connected on 18-of-25 (72%) from the foul line.
Emory and Henry entered the game averaging 130.3 points-per-game and allowing 133 points-per-game due in part to the Grinnell style system it employs. Cain Landreth led the Wasps with 20 points, while Robert Hudson scored 19, Lance Reasbeck 15 and Korey Townsend finished with 13 as Emory and Henry failed to score 100 points for the first time this season.
Hampden-Sydney returns to the floor Wednesday, December 7, as the Tigers host Lynchburg College at 7 pm in the second of five consecutive home games during the month of December. The game will be broadcast live on FM 95.7 WFLO and on the internet at www.hsc.edu/athletics.
