Colby-Sawyer 88, Nichols 78

NEW LONDON, N.H. — Colby-Sawyer used an 11-3 run with six minutes to play to put away a solid Nichols club on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Bison, 88-78, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both schools.

Andrew St. Clair scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Chargers (3-2, 1-0 CCC), who snapped a two-game losing skid with the victory.

The Bison (2-2, 0-1 CCC), who trailed by as many as 12 in the first half, cut the Charger lead to two twice in the second period. The second time, coming at the 9:33 mark of the half, came on a pair of free throws by Ron Powers to cut the Charger lead to 62-60. The Chargers would answer, though, with the 11-3 run, keyed by a three-point play by Duncan Szeliga, to go ahead, 73-65, with 6:18 to play.Nichols would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.

Collin Bray added 13 points for the Chargers, while Matt Spanos and Szeliga both scored 12 points. For Nichols, Casey Butler led all scorers with 22 ppoints, while Justin Lewis added 20, Chris Vallee 12 and Jah'maine Mercer had 10.

Colby-Sawyer returns to action on Tuesday night, hosting the University of New England in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
