The Captains trailed by 11 at the break, 35-24. CNU took the lead for the first time in the game with 15:30 left in the second half to go up 41-39 on a bucket by Korey Lewis. The Captains led by as many as three, 45-42, with 14:08 left in the game on a jumper by Davon Barton.
Curry retook the lead minutes later on a free throw by Stephen Prescod to go up 46-45. The Colonels led by as many as six, 53-47 with 10:49 remaining on a lay-up by Marcus Jones. CNU whittled away at the lead before taking over for good with 22 seconds left on a bizarre play.
Curry called a time out with 31 seconds left to go, but when the teams came back on the floor, the Colonels had six players on the court. It took the officials almost 10 seconds to realize it and when they did, they whistled Curry for a technical foul. Jeremy Romeo went to the line and sank both free throws to put CNU ahead 65-64 and they also retained possession.
After a missed free throw by the Captains, CNU's Lewis fouled a player on Curry. With a fresh shot clock, the Colonels drove the length of the floor but Michael Mohrin was whistled for a charge. After a Curry foul, Baron made both free throws to give the Captains a 68-65 lead with seven seconds left. Mohrin carried the ball inside CNU's half of the floor and tossed up a 25-footer, but Coleman was there for the Captains to swat it away and preserve the win.
The Colonels finished 23-of-57 (40%) from the field, 10-of-22 (46%) on three's and 9-of-14 (64%) from the free throw line.
The Captains shot 26-of-67 (39%) from the floor, 5-of-16 (31%) on three's and 11-of-15 (73%) from the charity stripe.
Curry was paced by four in double figures. James Bartelle led the way with 18 points and six rebounds. Mohrin added 15 points and seven boards while Deryk Largesse finished with 12 points off the bench and Marcus Jones had 11 points.
Christopher Newport was led by Jeremy Romeo's 14 points and six rebounds. Edward Riley added 12 points off the bench. Donta Selden finished with nine points, Coleman added eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Lewis finished with eight, as did Mark Blasingame.
The Colonels fall to 2-3 on the year. The Captains improve to 4-1. CNU is off for the next nine days for exams. The Captains return to action Monday, December 12 as they host Maryland Bible with tip-off set for 7:30 pm.
