DeRock scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half as the Pipers (2-3, 1-1 MIAC) built a 37-28 halftime lead. The Pipers held off a late charge from the Knights (2-3, 0-2 MIAC), who were paced by Dan Forkrud’s (Sr./Rosemount, Minn.) 20 points. Jake Phillips (Jr./Brainerd, Minn.) added 18 points and five assists, canning 4-of-8 from three-point range.
Charley Good (Alexandria, Minn.) added 14 points and five rebounds for Hamline while Tony Thrasher (Fy./Hustisford, Wis.) was also in double figures with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Pipers broke the game open midway through the first half, outscoring the Knights 9-2 to extend a 24-22 lead to 33-24, taking a 37-28 lead into the locker room. The visitors sprinted to a 14-point lead in the first two minutes of the second half as Sam Wiener (Jr./Marshall, Minn.) and Good scored inside, Kyle Foster (Jr./Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) converted on the fast break and Good scored again inside.
The Pipers’ lead grew to as many as 16 on a Thrasher triple midway through the half before the Knights whittled the deficit to seven on the strength of a 15-6 spurt, capped by a Brian Sharkey (Sr./Bow, N.H./St. Paul’s School) three. The Knights got as close as four as Tommy Drake (So./Eden Prairie, Minn.) made two free throws, Zach Johnson (Fy./Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) scored inside and Forkrud canned a jumper, but Dave Johnson (Fy./New London, Minn./New London-Spicer) and Foster got loose on the interior for consecutive hoops to seal the win.
Johnson added 14 points, six steals, four rebounds and three assists for Carleton and Drake was also in double figures with 11 points.
The Pipers held a 43-25 rebounding spread, although second-chance points were even at 11. Hamline reserves held a huge 30-9 scoring edge.
The Knights return to action on Monday, Dec. 5, traveling to St. John’s University for a 7:30 p.m. contest. The Pipers host MIAC preseason favorite St. Thomas at 8 p.m. as part of a women’s/men’s doubleheader.
