Cortland State 65, Fredonia State 48

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Cortland jumped out to a 28-11 lead and held off a Fredonia rally in the second half to defeat the Blue Devils, 65-48. The Red Dragons have won four straight games and are now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in SUNYAC play. Fredonia is 2-3 and 0-2.

Senior Frank Ranieri (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) led Cortland with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor. He also grabbed four rebounds. Junior Dave Maggiacomo (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) made 4-of-8 three-pointers and finished with 14 points and junior Rod Headley (Peekskill) scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds. Senior Simon Skrelja (Hastings-on-Hudson/Hastings) led the Red Dragons with eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Junior Taha Alassari (Brooklyn/Sweet Home) paced Fredonia with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Senior Chris Donahue (Olean) and junior Kevin Reichlmayr (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) each finished with six rebounds.

With the game tied 5-5, Cortland went on a 23-6 run over a 12-minute span to take a 28-11 lead. The margin was at 16 with 1:48 left in the half on Maggiacomo's three-pointer, but Fredonia scored six of the last seven points of the half and trailed 37-26 at the break.

Alassari's layup with 13:19 left brought the Blue Devils as close as they would get at 44-39. Cortland led by eight, 55-47, with 3:32 left before finishing the game on a 10-1 streak.

Cortland turned the ball over only five times in the contest compared to Fredonia's 17 turnovers. The Red Dragons shot 45 percent from the field, its lowest total of the season, but held the Blue Devils to 37 percent shooting. Fredonia made on 4-of-18 three-point attempts (22 percent).
