Calvin 82, Carthage 78

HOLLAND, Mich. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (1-3, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to Calvin College (4-3), 82-78, on Friday, Dec. 2 at the second-annual CCIW/MIAA Men’s Basketball Classic at Hope College’s newly-opened DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland, Mich. No. 14 Hope (4-0) plays CCIW-member Wheaton College (Ill., 2-1) on Friday at 8 p.m., EST in the second game. On Saturday, Dec. 3, Carthage plays Hope at 3 p.m., EST, with Calvin facing Wheaton (Ill.) at 1 p.m., EST.

Carthage jumped out to an eight-point lead, 20-12, at 10:50. The Redmen enjoyed a brief 10-point lead, 34-24, at 2:19 first period, before the Knights closed out the half with a 9-2 run to cut the Red Men’s lead to 36-33 at the break. Calvin took a 41-40 lead at 17:30. Carthage went back up by four, 47-43, at 14:44 before Calvin used a 9-0 run to go up by five, 52-47. The Redmen had a 52-52 tie at 11:08. Calvin took a 54-52 lead at 10:48 and led for the next six minutes before Carthage took a 67-65 lead at 5:06 on a three-pointer by Trey Bowens. The Knights’ Kyle Trewhella nailed a three-pointer at 2:08 to tie the contest, 72-72. Trewhella scored on a layup with 58 seconds remaining to give Calvin a 74-72 lead. The Red Men’s Trey Bowens answered with a basket at 47 seconds to re-tie the game, 74-74. Caleb Veldhouse hit a pair of free throws at 34 seconds to put the Knights up to stay, 76-74. Bowens missed two layup attempts on Carthage’s next possession, and the Redmen were whistled for a foul. Josh Meckes hit both free throws for a 78-74 lead. Nebojsa Franciskovic hit a jumper to make it 78-76. Veldhouse hit two more free throws with 6.6 second on the clock to make it an 80-76 game. A Bowens layup made it 80-78 with three seconds to go, and Trewhella’s final two free throws with 2.4 seconds made it 82-78 and closed out the scoring. Both teams shot 44 percent from the floor, Carthage at 31-for-70 and Calvin at 27-for-61. Four Carthage players scored in double figures. Trey Bowens had 22 points on nine-of-19 field goals, along with seven rebounds. Kyle Jeffery had 16 points. Navarro Thompson had 12 points, and Keena Johnson added 11 points. Calvin’s Caleb Veldhouse led all scorers with 24 points.
