Wentworth 84, Daniel Webster 60

Boston, Mass. — Senior forward Frankie Hall (Boston, Mass.) scored 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting to pace four double-figure scorers as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men’s basketball team cruised to an 84-60 win over Daniel Webster in a non-league men’s basketball game played at Tansey Gymnasium.

The game opened up with Wentworth leading by as much as four on two separate occasions, but Daniel Webster answered each time and would go up 14-12 on a layup from sophomore forward Neal Foley (Tewksbury, Mass.) with 13:10 left in the half. That would be the last lead the Eagles would have as from there the Leopards went on an 8-0 run to take a 20-14 lead with just under 11 minutes left in the half. During the run, sophomore guard Jason DaCosta (Cambridge, Mass.) had four points, including nailing a pair of free throws to give Wentworth the 20-14 lead.

Daniel Webster fought back and would cut the back to two twice, including with 8:13 left when freshman forward Andrew Greeno (Brandon, Vt.) hit a jumper to trim the lead to 22-20. However, Wentworth answered right back, outscoring the visitors 25-7 to close the half. During the first 20:00, the Leopards shot a torrid 61.3 percent (19-for-31) from the floor.

To open the second half, the Eagles would get the lead back to 13 one last time, before Wentworth went on a 16-7 spurt and put the game away.

Sophomore guard Sherrad Prezzie-Blue (Norwalk, Conn.) had 11 points and five assists, while freshman guard Todd Doyle (Mystic, Conn.) had 10 points and six assists, and freshman Jeff Cappa (Waterbury, Conn.) chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds of his own.

Daniel Webster got a game-high 15 points, to go along with five assists, from senior guard Chris Fox (McLean, N.Y.).

Both teams open conference play on Saturday. Daniel Webster (0-4) travels to Emerson for its GNAC opener against the Lions, while Wentworth travels to the University of New England for its CCC opener against the Nor’Easters.
