Tufts 91, Mass-Dartmouth 74

MEDFORD, Ma. — Sophomore forward Jake Weitzen (New York, NY) poured in 21 points to lead the Tufts University men’s basketball team to a 91-74 victory against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Thursday night, the fourth straight win for the Jumbos.

Tufts shot 11 of 21 from three-point territory and passed the ball well, collecting 20 assists on 33 baskets. They improved to 4-1 overall. The Corsairs (2-3) were down just seven at the half, and closed to within four in the second half, but the Jumbos pulled away.

After the visiting Corsairs maintained an early advantage, the Jumbos ran off eight straight points to take a lead that they would not relinquish. Tufts led 12-8 after that spurt on a pair of free throws by senior tri-captain Brian Fitzgerald (Bedford, NH) at 14:17. The margin would grow to as many as 12 points in the first half, 32-20, following a lay-up by Weitzen at 6:45. UMass Dartmouth trimmed it to 50-43 at the break. Weitzen had 11 points at the half for Tufts and junior captain Paul Pawlowski (Taunton, MA) had the same for the Corsairs.

Into the second half, UMass Dartmouth was within 58-54 on a lay-up by junior Dan Holbrook (Lexington, MA) at 16:48. The margin was at six points, 62-56, when the Jumbos took control of the game. They scored the next 11 points to earn a 73-56 lead at 11:39 on three-pointer by sophomore guard Jeremy Black (Jamesville, NY). He had two trifectas during the run to spur the Jumbos.

The Corsairs were able to respond with the next five points, making it 73-61 on a lay-up by Charlie Large (Easton, MA). However, they would get no closer. The Tufts lead hit 20 at 4:07 and the hosts were able to empty their bench for the final minutes.

Joining Weitzen to lead the Jumbos was junior guard David Shepherd (Grantham, NH) with 16 points and six assists. Both Black, who added five assists and three steals, and sophomore Ryan O’Keefe (Everett, MA) finished with 13 points. Tufts played nearly the entire game without second-leading scorer and leading rebounder Dan Martin (Sandwich, MA), who was injured in the opening minutes. Fitzgerald pulled down 14 rebounds as Tufts earned a 43-38 edge on the boards.

Holbrook finished as the game-high scorer with 22 points, scoring on eight of his 11 field goal attempts. He also had eight rebounds to lead his team and was 6 of 7 from the free throw line. Both Pawlowski and junior Stephane Abelard (Brockton, MA) recorded 12 points and six rebounds. The Corsairs were just 4 for 20 from three-point land. UMD was a steady 18 for 25 from the line (72%), with Pawlowski also hitting 6 of 7 attempts.
