Salve Regina 60, Johnson and Wales 55

NEWPORT, R.I. — Salve Regina University men's basketball overcame an early seven-point deficit (12-5) to defeat visiting Johnson & Wales University, 60-55, in a non-league contest in Newport.

Matt Grendal [JR/Foxboro, Mass.] layups in the first half gave the Seahawks three-point leads on two occasions, first at 17-14 with 6:25 remaining and again at 25-22 going into intermission. Grendal's free throws with 15:12 remaining in the second gave Salve Regina a 10-point lead (38-28). John Hazzard [JR/North Kingstown, R.I.] hit a three-pointer from the corner for the game's largest lead (51-37 with 8:48 left).

Wildcat guard Brian Bannister [SR/Boston, Mass.] scored nine of his game-high 17 points after that mark, including a pair of free throws with 1:07 left to cut the deficit to five (57-52). Grendal countered with another pair from the charity stripe before a Japhet Kerr [JR/Mt. Kisco, N.Y.] three-pointer closed the gap to four.

Both teams shot poorly from the line (JWU - 52.4%; SRU - 50.0%) although Bannister and Grendal went 6-for-8 and 5-for-7 for their respective squads. Grendal finished with his third straight double-double (13 points, 15 rebounds). Hazzard finished with a team-high 16 points while Matt Coute [SR/Somerset, Mass.] added a dozen for Salve Regina.

Johnson & Wales (2-1) suffers its first loss of the season before heading to Southern Vermont on Saturday; the Wildcats are on the road for the first seven games of the season and don't play at home until January. Salve Regina (4-1) opens its conference schedule at Gordon College on Saturday at 3:00PM.
