Whatever adjustments the Crusaders made for the second half worked to perfection, as they shot a blistering 71% from the field in the second half and outscored the Cougars 49-37 to send the contest into overtime.
Capital never led in the second half as Heitkamp tied the game with just five seconds to play on a layup to send it into overtime.
Each team scored 15 points in the first overtime period as Capital had a chance to win but a three-pointer from senior guard Kati Todd could not find the bottom of the net and would go into a second overtime stanza.
The Crusaders led throughout the second overtime and were aided by stellar free-throw shooting, hitting 10-12 shots from the charity stripe to seal the victory.
Mt. Vernon Nazarene's 106 points were the most given up in a single game by any Crusader team, but an even better shooting night for Capital (59% from the field, 72% from the free-throw line) brought home a victory.
Six players fouled out of the contest, four for the Cougars and two for the Crusaders as the teams took a combined 95 free-throws.
Heitkamp's 36 points also vaulted her into seventh all-time in career scoring as she now has 1,276 points. She added eight rebounds and five assists in the game.
Senior forward Jennifer Lilly poured in 15 points and grabbed nine boards, while Todd tacked on 14 markers, including two three-pointers.
Freshmen Heather McAlpin and Daniele Manalac also scored in double-figures, recording 12 and 10 points respectively. McAlpin added six rebounds and four assists and Manalac grabbed four boards.
Katie Keller led the Cougars with 31 points and Rachel Fiely added 21.
Capital will start Ohio Athletic Conference play this weekend when they travel to Muskingum on Saturday for a 3 p.m. game.
