Emmanuel 71, MIT 67

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Despite facing a 19-point deficit with 15:32 remaining in the second half, MIT went on a 27-9 run during the next 13 minutes to cut Emmanuel College’s lead to one point (64-63). The Saints responded by sinking 5-of-8 shots from the free-throw line and a jumper in the lane down the stretch to take a 71-67 win in women’s basketball action on Thursday night. Karen Kinnaman posted a game-high 20 points for the Engineers (2-2) while Brittany Bushman led the way for Emmanuel (2-2) with 19 points.

The Saints opened the game with six unanswered points, keeping Tech off the scoreboard until Cherelle Walls’ lay-up after 2:30 had elapsed. Kinnaman evened the score at six with a pair of free throws and a fast-break bucket. Both squads traded baskets until the 11-minute mark when Emmanuel took the lead for good at 14-12 on a lay-up by Molly Forbes. The Saints entered the intermission with a 44-27 advantage, capitalizing on 25 points off of 23 MIT turnovers.

The second stanza was a different story for the Engineers as they allowed only nine turnovers and outscored Emmanuel, 40-27. Tech’s defense powered its huge run as it generated eight rebounds, three steals, and forced seven turnovers. After shooting 47.4% from the floor in the first half, the Saints found themselves making only 29.6% of their shots in the second frame. MIT also developed a strong presence on the offensive glass as seven boards resulted in six points and improved its second-half shooting percentage to 48.5%.

Clara Yuan’s sharp-shooting totaled 18 points by hitting 6-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-9 from three-point range. She also finished with a team-high 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Walls contributed 10 points off the bench while posting three steals. Christa Margossian finished with eight caroms as Kimberly Soo Hoo dished out six assists.

Emmanuel’s LaTeisha Johnson had a solid showing as she tallied 17 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks, and three steals. Alyssa McCoy also finished in double-figures with 13 points while Jade Paez distributed six assists.

The next game for MIT will be on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 1:00 p.m. when it hosts Polytechnic University.
