Capital 63, Washington and Jefferson 55

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Capital closed the game on a 16-9 run in the final 6:25 to earn a 63-55 victory over Washington & Jefferson in men’s basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Henry Memorial Center.

The Crusaders (4-2) were led by senior forward Jake Beck’s (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo St. John’s) game-high 20 points and seven rebounds.

Capital jumped out to a 14-9 lead through the first eight minutes, but a 15-4 W&J rally over the next nine minutes gave the Presidents a 24-18 lead at the 3:08 mark. Sophomore guard Anthony Hairston (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) fueled the run for W&J with six points.

Sophomore guard David Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) drilled a triple with 2:41 remaining in the half for the final points of the first 20 minutes.

The teams were tied five times in the first eight minutes of the second half and Washington & Jefferson took a 44-42 lead at the 8:31 mark after a three-pointer by sophomore forward Kevin Bringman (Fairview Park, Ohio/St. Edward’s).

Freshman forward Mark Tinklenberg (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) answered with a trey 16 seconds later and the Crusaders would not give up the lead the rest of the way. W&J sophomore guard Jon Koch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) made it a 53-49 game with 2:57 remaining, but that was as close as the Presidents would get.

Beck knocked down 7-of-14 shots from the floor, while Johnson and sophomore guard Bill Cullom (Greenfield, Ohio/McClain) each netted 10 markers. Capital shot 43 percent (20-of-47) and held a 32-21 rebounding advantage.

Koch led the W&J effort with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Hairston made his first six shots and finished with 12 points. W&J shot 44 percent (20-of-45), but committed 20 turnovers, including 15 in the second half.

Washington & Jefferson (1-3) travels to Case Western Reserve for a 7:00 pm tip-off on Thursday evening.
