Ohio Wesleyan 93, Case Western Reserve 83

DELAWARE, Ohio — Sophomore post Ben Chojnacki scored 7 points to highlight a 17-4 second-half run that lifted Ohio Wesleyan over Case Reserve in non- conference action on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

After the Spartans took a 68-66 lead on Carson Oren's jumper with 8:03 left in regulation time, the Bishops went ahead to stay on a 3-pointer by junior wing Andy Warnock with 7:01 to go.

Chojnacki followed with a 3-point play to increase the Bishop lead to 72-68, but Funso Lafe scored to bring Case Reserve within 72-70 with 6:13 remaining.

Senior guard Bryan King answered with a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, and Chojnacki followed with a lay-in to give the Bishops a 77-70 lead. Lafe scored again to slice the CWRU deficit to 5 points, but Chojnacki scored another bucket and freshman post Dustin Rudegeair added a 3- point play to give the Bishops an 82-72 lead with 3:27 to go. Junior guard Ross Rybarczyk capped the run by hitting one of 2 free throws for an 83-72 Ohio Wesleyan edge with 3:02 to play.

The Spartans closed to within 9 points on Lafe's lay-in with 1:00 to go, but King and sophomore wing Ted Uritus each sank a pair of free throws to ice the game.

The first half was a nailbiter that featured 13 ties and saw neither team lead by more than 3 points. Ohio Wesleyan took a 44-42 lead into the locker room on King's jumper in the final minute of the half.

Uritus scored 3 baskets as Ohio Wesleyan opened the second half with an 11-2 run over the first 4 minutes, giving the Bishops a 55-44 lead with 16:02 left in regulation time.

Case Reserve came back with an 11-2 run of its own, with Jeremy Sallee drilling a pair of 3-pointers and adding a lay-in, to close to within 57-55 with 13:43 to go. The Spartans eventually pulled even at 66-66 on a free throw by Oren, then took the lead on Oren's jumper with 8:03 to go.

Chojnacki led the Bishops with 22 points and shared the team lead with 6 rebounds. Rybarczyk posted career bests of 17 points and 11 assists for Ohio Wesleyan, while King ended up with 16 points, Uritus added 15 points and shared the team lead with 6 rebounds and Rudegeair finished with 14 points and shared the team lead with 6 rebounds.

Oren led the Spartans with 28 points and 5 assists. Matt Cannan added 17 points, Oren finished with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds and Sallee kicked in 11 points.
