Methodist is also off to its first 4-1 start to a season since the 1995-96 season.
Trailing by a point 34-33 at halftime, Methodist took Voorhees’ game right at the Tigers in the second half. Pressing the issue, the Monarchs scored 74 second half points while shooting a sizzling 74 percent (23-for-31) from the field, including 67 percent (6-for-9) from 3-point range.
With score tied 43-43 with 15 minutes remaining in the game, Methodist increased the lead to 57-47 on two Eugene Grant 3-point baskets and one each by Robert Lee and Jonathan Jackson. Voorhees trimmed the deficit to 62-56 with 9:37 remaining, but the Monarchs answered with a 10-0 run to lead 72-56 with 7:40 remaining.
Voorhees would keep it within 12 points over the next three minutes before Methodist put the game away. The Monarchs answered an Antonio Simpson 3-point basket at the 4:35 mark with an 11-0 run. Sam Porter’s lay-up off a Tiger turnover gave the Monarchs a comfortable 95-76 lead with three minutes remaining.
Grant and Thomas both had tremendous games for Methodist, reaching new career highs offensively. Grant scored a career-high 31 points on 11-for-15 shooting from the field, marking the most points by a Methodist player in a game since Montrell McNair's 33 points against Apprentice in 1997-98. Thomas scored a career-high 25 points, while Porter scored 21 points with nine rebounds.
Jackson added eight points off the bench.
For the game, Methodist shot 56 percent from the field, including 40 percent from 3-point range.
For Voorhees (5-6), Horace Cofield scored 17 points as five Tigers scored in double-figures. Simpson scored 15 points off the bench, while Devan Doshier scored 13 points and Gilbert Allen and Randy McPhee each added 12 points.
Methodist is off for the next week-and-a-half for final exams before returning to action on Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. at Piedmont.
