The FSU win snaps a three game winning streak for Shenandoah (3-1) in the longtime series between the two schools. The Bobcats now lead the all-time series 43-33.
Frostburg (2-2) got the victory when Kamillo Rosenthal converted a pair of free throws after Chris Rhone (Washington, D.C/Northwestern) was called for the technical with 55.3 seconds remaining after giving SU a 72-71 advantage on an 18-foot jumper.
Shenandoah held on the ensuing possession, but turned the ball over with just over eight seconds left. After Brian Owen converted 1 of 2 free throws, SU pushed the ball for the last shot. After calling another time-out with 2.3 seconds on the clock, Rhone’s last second runner from the baseline fell short and the Onyie Onunaku (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) put-back came after the buzzer.
Rhone led all scorers with a game high 20 points while Onunaku added 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals.
Rosenthal matched Rhone with 20 points; he had 13 after the break.
A pair of runs, one each by Shenandoah and Frostburg, kept the first half close. After SU jumped out to a 16-10 lead with a 9-0 run from the 13:34 to 12:20 marks, the Bobcats scored the game’s next eight points in 3:10 to take an 18-10 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining.
The two teams traded the lead five times and were tied on four other occasions before the Hornets took the lead for the final time in the first on a pair of Rhone free throws with 3:24 left.
Rhone led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with 11 points while Jason Peterson had 10 for FSU. Neither team shot particularly well; Shenandoah was 13 for 35 (37.1 percent) and the Bobcats were 11 for 37 (29.7 percent).
