Benedictine 73, Carthage 62

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (2-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 21st in the November 30 “D3hoops.com” pool, lost to non-conference opponent Benedictine University (Ill., 3-1), 73-62, on Tuesday, November 30 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. The Eagles opened up a nine-point lead in the first half, 36-27, at 2:29 before the Redmen closed to within two, 36-34, at 1:13. Benedictine (Ill.) led at the break, 40-36. Carthage took its last lead, 46-45, at 12:14, before the Eagles used a 15-3 run to open up an 11-point margin, 60-49, at 5:43. The Redmen closed to within six on three occasions, the last at 66-60 at 1:35, but Benedictine (Ill.) cruised from there to take an 11-point decision, 73-62. Carthage shot just 32 percent for the game (24-74), including a miserable 28 percent (10-36) in the second half. The Eagles shot 41 percent for the game (27-66). Carthage’s Kevin Menard had 17 points, despite hitting only five-of-17 from the floor, while Brian Schlemm added 10 points. Pat Kalamatas had seven points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Marcus Jackson scored a game-high 18 points for Benedictine (Ill.), along with seven rebounds. Will Crawford had 17 points and 10 boards, while Matt Harrison added 17 points and seven rebounds. On Friday-Saturday, December 3-4, Carthage travels to Wheaton College (Ill.) for the inaugural CCIW/MIAA Men’s Basketball Classic at King Arena in Wheaton, Ill. Carthage plays Hope College (1-2) at 6 p.m. on December 3, with the Thunder playing host to Calvin College at 8 p.m. On December 4, the Redmen take on Calvin at 1 p.m., with Wheaton (Ill.) playing Hope at 3 p.m.
