Averett 81, Newport News 65

DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men’s basketball team used a late 14-0 run to defeat Newport News Apprentice Tuesday in the Grant Center by an 81-65 final. The win over Apprentice was the first for Averett in their last six meetings, dating back to February 11, 2001.

Averett (2-1) led by as many as 12 in the first half and had opened up an 11-point second half lead before the Builders (1-3) began to battle back. The Cougars saw a six-point lead quickly dissipate, after three 3-point plays by Apprentice. After Charles Holiday’s 3-pointer with 7:30 remaining in the contest, the Averett lead was trimmed to 61-60. However, the Cougars’ run ensued, as they scored the next 14 points. In fact, Averett ended the game on a 20-5 spurt for the 81-65 final.

Sterling Williams led the Averett attack once again, as he netted a career-high 25 points. He was 10-of-16 from the field and also dished nine assists. Jeremy Haskins and Cameron Brown each contributed with 14 points. Brown lit-it-up from outside, as he scored on 4-of-6 long-range attempts. Andrew Boor added 12 points for Averett, as Lymon Gregory pulled down a team-best 11 boards.

Four Builders scored in double figures, led by Holiday’s 20. Curtis Pender tallied 14 points, Nathan Robinson 13, and Terrance Bryant scored 10. Bryant and Robinson each notched double-doubles, as they grabbed 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

The Cougars will take a break from competition, as the players prepare for final exams. They return to action on December 11 at Maryville College of Tennessee.
