11/29/04- For two straight games, the Sul Ross Lobos have made jaw-clenching comebacks in the second half. Monday night’s game saw the Lobos rally midway through the second half on their way to a 78-62 American Southwest Conference win against the Louisiana College Wildcats.
Sidney Hooper (Andrews) led the Lobos in scoring with his 15 points. He also had an assist and 2 steals to his credit for the evening.
Justin Steward (Texico, NM) totaled 13 points for the night and led rebounders with 6 boards. Aaron Hardwick (El Paso) and Derric Workman (Odessa) contributed 11 and 10 points respectively as they rounded out the double figures department.
Steward and Rick Herrera (Alamogordo, NM) totaled 4 assists apiece in the win.
Louisiana College had a cold start against Sul Ross in the first 3 minutes of the game but relied on solid parameter shooting by Morey Skluzacek and Casey Wallace who both tallied 11 points for the contest. Nine of Skluzacek’s points came from long range as he nailed 3-7 three-pointers while Wallace hit 2 of 3 outside the arch.
The aggressive Wildcat shooting game gave L.C. a 41-34 lead at intermission.
The Lobo offense came alive though in the second half as Sully hit 59.3% of its shots from the field compared to 40.5% in the first half. The Lobos also saw a dramatic upward turn from the charity stripe in the second half hitting 71.4% of their free throws compared with just 16.7% in the first half.
The conference victory gives Sul Ross a perfect 3-0 season record and a conference record of 2-0.
Sully will head to Sherman for a Thursday conference date with the Austin College Kangaroos.
