Baquero's total broke his previous career high of 25 points, set on Dec. 7, 2002, during his sophomore season. The senior co-captain was 10-of-17 from the field, including 7-for-14 from three-point range. The three-point total matched his career best.
HPU's Dante Sykes led the Seasiders (2-1) with 20 points, including the game-winning triple with 3.8 seconds left. Carleton had a chance to tie, but Jake Phillips' (So./Brainerd, Minn.) half-court shot at the horn was just short.
Kyle Beste added 19 points and five rebounds and Dan Forkrud added 14 points, six rebounds and four steals for Carleton (0-3).
Audrius Peciukas added 18 points and 11 rebounds for HPU and Stevie Johnson came off the bench for 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. The Seasiders held a 31-3 advantage in bench scoring.
The Knights trailed 40-34 at the break and fell behind by as many as 11 points before rallying. They used a 16-4 spurt to turn a 57-46 deficit into a 62-61 lead, using three-pointers from Khalid Lakanwal, Phillips and Forkrud during the run. Carleton would take its final lead of the game, 65-64, at the 6:43 mark on a Baquero triple before the host Seasiders pushed the lead back to five, 74-69, with 2:13 left.
Carleton wouldn't die, however, getting a Forkrud bucket and Baquero three to tie the game with 1:12 remaining. Each team missed on their next possessions before Sykes' heroics and Phillips' near miss.
The visitors raced to an early 15-10 lead, only to see the Seasiders rattle off six straight points. Carleton regained the lead and the half would be back-and-forth the rest of the way, with Carleton taking a three-point lead on a Baquero three. HPU closed the half with a 15-6 spurt, as the Knights managed only one field goal over the final four minutes of the half.
Carleton was outrebounded 34-27 but was only outscored 13-10 on second-chance points. Carleton turned the ball over 13 times, compared to 10 for HPU, and faced a 24-10 disparity in points off turnovers.
The Knights return to action by opening MIAC play on Saturday, Dec. 4 at Hamline University at 3 p.m.
