St. Davids, PA (November 29, 2004) - Behind the inside strength of senior forward Brandon King, Rowan University (1-2, 0-1) defeated the Eastern University Eagles (1-3, 0-0), 68-48, Monday night at the Athletic Center at Eastern.
King poured in 15 points and collected 7 rebounds to control the inside game for the Profs. In the first half, King netted 8 of his 15 on 4-4 shooting, but also got into foul trouble early. Freshman guard Matt Byrnes deposited a team-high17 points including 6 of 8 from the stripe.
The Profs held the lead for the entire game, but the Eagles remained intense on defense and pulled to within 10 points at the 14:24 mark in the second half on a 3-pointer by Corey Copeland (Baltimore, MD/Mt. St. Josephs). The Eagles would never get any closer as Rowan pulled away for their first win of the year.
For the Eagles, junior forward Chris McMonagle (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) led all scorers with 16, while Copeland netted 10 on 2 of 3 shooting from behind the arc. Senior Brent Voorhees (Grandville, MI/Tri-Unity) hit five points and led all rebounders for Eastern with four. Voorhees also added 2 assists and 2 steals.
The Eagles will travel to conference opponent Wesley College on Wednesday night to take on the Wolverines at 8pm, then host another conference match-up with College Misericordia in an afternoon game at 3pm.
