The DC men’s basketball squad blew out Davenport University, 92-48, on Monday night at the Karl H. Weaner Center.
Curt Croy and C.J. Johnson led the way with 15 and 13 points respectively, but 13 Jackets scored in the win, with 48 of those points coming in the paint, compared to DU’s 16. DC jumped out to a 28-8 lead in the first 13 minutes and never looked back, leading at the half, 43-17.
A lay-up and two free throws by Matt Voland gave Defiance a 46-21 lead early in the second half. Later the Jacket lead broke 40 points when Joel Ruffer’s lay-up made the score 84-44, where it stayed until back to back lay-ins by Tyler Niese expanded the lead to 88-46. The DC bench outscored the Panther reserves, 39-15, while the Jackets also scored 34 points off of turnovers, compared to Davenport’s six.
Matt Voland led the Jackets in rebounding with seven, and also added 12 points, while Phil Blasko and Ruffer each added eight points and three rebounds. Trent Meyer played well at the point, dishing out six assists.
The Jackets shot 52% from the floor and 68% from the line, while hitting just 32% of their long range attempts.
DC also forced the Panthers into 28 turnovers, leading to 17 fast-break points.
The Jackets are now 3-1 on the year while the Panthers fall to 1-5. DC will next host Marygrove on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. before welcoming the University of Michigan-Dearborn, Olivet, and Madonna to the Purple & Gold Financial Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
